Handling Suicidal Conversations

Identify and support those at risk of suicide. Course is suitable for any adult, but particularly relevant to those working in public-facing and frontline roles, or anyone that comes into contact with at risk people.

We will review insights from the national suicide prevention picture and introduce you to the process of identifying and responding to potentially suicidal people. The course will ensure you are better prepared for these conversations through active listening tips and how to support someone in crisis.

Learn how to identify behaviours and indicators that someone contemplating suicide might say. The course will cover the risk groups and risk factors for suicide identified nationally and how the issues that they face might contribute to suicidal thoughts. Learn how to use the right language and communication to help mitigate a crisis point.

Supporting vulnerable people and this briefing will also introduce ways to look after your own wellbeing when dealing with traumatic events and maintain a mentally healthy workplace.

You will learn how to:

Suicide Prevention and Self-harm Conversations

Equip staff with the knowledge and skills needed to identify and respond to individuals who may be at risk of suicide or self-harm.

Our workshop will provide a safe and supportive space for staff to learn evidence-based strategies for identifying and responding to at-risk individuals.

Workshop would include:

  • Conversations with suicidal people. Identifying someone, how to offer support, listening tips, conversation tips, next steps
  • Self-harm. What is self-harm? Signs to look out for, how to support
  • Sharing experiences and scenarios
  • Resources

Introducing our trainers

Neil Peters has 13+ years’ experience of working in suicide prevention, firstly at Samaritans where he was Strategic Programme Lead for the Suicide Prevention on the Railways partnership, and latterly running Nuthatch Consultants.

Neil presented a series of radio shows on Mens Radio called Men Talk Mental Health, exploring with friends and connections issues affecting men’s mental health. He is on the advisory board for the suicide prevention Charity R;pple.

Lisa Malangone is a fully-qualified and registered (MBACP) Counsellor and Psychotherapist, with more than 15 years’ experience working in various settings, providing counselling support, management and consultancy to community services, the NHS, schools, and further education establishments. Through her private practice, Yeshe Therapies, her services also include Life Coaching; Reiki (Reiki Master & Teacher); EFT; ThetaHealing and Access Bars.

Lisa previously set up, and managed for 10 years, a charity-funded counselling service for young people aged 11-25. A few years after Off The Record Sutton started it successfully achieved statutory funding and Lisa was instrumental in developing and managing the resulting partnership with the local CAMHS.

Lisa has a wealth of experience in the areas of suicide and self-harm. She was Safeguarding Lead and Senior Clinician at Off The Record Sutton, regularly assessing and working with young people with complex mental and emotional health needs. Lisa also developed and delivered workshops on self-harm as part of a series of support for young people, parents/carers, and other professionals.

Lisa and Neil also work together at Nuthatch Retreats, a nature connect organisation using nature to support people’s wellbeing, we create opportunities for people to get outside, spend time in nature and take part in activities such as forest bathing, mindfulness, bird watching and walk and talks.
