Men can experience mental health challenges in ways shaped by expectations around masculinity, relationships, fatherhood, work, social connection and help-seeking. We support organisations to better understand these experiences and develop practical, effective approaches to improving men’s mental health and preventing suicide.
Neil Peters, founder of Nuthatch Consultants, brings extensive experience of suicide prevention, mental health strategy, service development and partnership working. Neil spent 10 years at Samaritans, where he led an award-winning partnership with Network Rail, and has a particular professional and personal interest in male, paternal and perinatal mental health. He has worked with public sector, charity and business clients on men’s mental health, including Surrey County Council, London Borough of Merton, South East London Mind, Thames Valley Air Ambulance, Elmbridge Council and JP Morgan. He also established the Men’s Campfire Collective through Nuthatch Retreats, and has experience facilitating discussions and training on men’s mental health.
How we can help
We work with local authorities, public health teams, NHS organisations, charities, businesses and community organisations to turn insight into practical action. Our work can include:
- Men’s mental health strategy and planning: helping organisations understand needs, identify priorities and develop practical approaches to improving outcomes for men.
- Service and provision mapping: identifying existing services, community assets, referral routes, gaps and opportunities, including statutory, VCSE and community provision.
- Research and insight gathering: combining desk research, stakeholder conversations, surveys and lived experience to understand what men need and what prevents them from seeking support.
- Stakeholder engagement and network development: bringing organisations together to share learning, identify gaps and build stronger local networks and partnerships.
- Men’s mental health workshops and training: providing briefings, facilitated discussions and training to increase understanding of men’s mental health and improve confidence in responding to men’s needs.
- Suicide prevention: supporting organisations to strengthen their understanding of suicide risk, prevention approaches and opportunities for earlier intervention and support.
- Service development: helping organisations develop or improve services and interventions that are accessible and relevant to men.
- Campaigns and communications: using insight into men’s experiences and help-seeking behaviour to inform campaigns and messages that encourage men to talk, connect and seek support.
- Working with communities: engaging with the places and organisations where men already spend time, including community groups, sports clubs, gyms, barbers and other trusted settings.
- Facilitation and action planning: designing and facilitating events, workshops and working groups that move from discussion and insight towards practical action.
Our approach
We believe effective work with men starts with listening, understanding and building on what already exists. We work collaboratively with organisations, communities and people with lived experience to identify what is working, understand where the gaps are and develop realistic opportunities for change.
Our approach can be scaled to suit your needs, from a rapid review or mapping exercise through to longer-term strategy, partnership development or service creation.
If you’re looking to understand the needs of men in your area, strengthen suicide prevention, develop services, engage communities or bring partners together, get in touch to discuss your needs.
